Wednesday, June 8th, 2011On May 19th, 15 teams competed for the coveted Spelling Bee Challenge trophy at the Vancouver Convention Centre. This fun breakfast event was hosted by Norm Grohmann to raise money for ONE TO ONE’s literacy program. The participants had to start using their brains very early in the morning to try and correctly spell the words chosen from Scripp’s National Spelling Bee website (http://www.spellingbee.com/).
The winning team, “The Spielers”, from the Glen Group BMO Nesbitt Burns spelled 10 words out of 15 and took home the trophy while the Runners up, “The Killer Bees”, from RBC Global Asset Management Inc & RBC Phillips, Hager & North Investment Counsel Inc. took home individual medals for spelling nine words correctly. “The Pit Bulls”, an enthusiatic team of annual supporters, led by Ebie Pitfield placed third.
We look forward to the Spelling Bee in 2012 and hope everyone will invite their colleagues and friends to take up the challenge to raise funds for ONE TO ONE.

Volunteer Appreciation Tea 2011
Wednesday, April 20th, 2011Some of our Voluteers enjoying tea at the University Women’s Club on April 13 2011.
ONE TO ONE board members and staff were pleased to honour our dedicated volunteers on April 13th at our Annual Volunteer Appreciation Tea. Susin Nielsen, local award winning author and screenwriter, delivered an inspirational address to our tutors. Susin shared her personal story and talked about the impact of one teacher who showed a little faith in her as a child. She went on to emphasize the role that ONE TO ONE volunteers play in instilling in students a confidence and belief in themselves. As she noted, “…I stand here today as proof that sometimes, a little faith can go a long way.” Our theme this year was volunteers as our good fortune and volunteers truly are ONE TO ONE’s good fortune. Our over 320 volunteers donate hundreds of hours each week helping struggling readers become confident readers. We were very pleased to honour two special tutors: Alice Rolfe who has volunteered for ONE TO ONE since the program’s inception in 1989 and Peter Bone our oldest volunteer who at 89 is in his ninth year of tutoring.

In Service Training February 26 2011
Thursday, March 31st, 2011On Saturday February 26th, volunteers gathered for a ONE TO ONE presentation, “Ready, Set, Read”.
The tutoring equivalent to “location, location, location”, is “motivation, motivation, motivation”. Motivation is one of the most significant factors tutors can target in order to improve a student’s reading. Susan Williamson and Linda O’Reilly shared strategies and games to help tutors learn ways to take advantage of the many spur-of-the-moment opportunities for motivating students that happen during the course of tutoring sessions.
Volunteers learned how to engage students in lively conversations and five-minute reading games and enjoyed this idea packed session, going home with two ‘ready to use’ reading games to include in tutoring sessions.
