Literacy is defined as an individual’s ability to read, write, speak, think critically and problem solve at a proficiency that allows one to function in society. Poor literacy skills in childhood not only predict poor academic performance, but can lead to low self-esteem, social exclusion and reduced life choices.

Literacy programs provide children with the building blocks to academic and social success. By supporting literacy in your community, you are investing in the future for a child – a future where they can be learners, workers and members of the community that give back. Literacy gives children choices.

Many of the children in the ONE TO ONE program would not otherwise receive one on one time with a caring adult without the time given by our volunteers. The program is successful because our volunteers work side by side with classroom and support teachers. Our students are selected for the program by those that understand their reading and writing skills the best – their teachers.

ONE TO ONE provides 600 children each year with a trained reading tutor. By donating to ONE TO ONE you can provide a child with a ONE TO ONE tutor and the opportunity to learn a love of reading.
